Still an academic, most likely always will be till the day I push up the daisies, so long as it doesn't push me down quicker than I am planning on. Became a full prof in 2021, well worth the effort but as a physician - scientist, there are many rewarding things about my job that make it much less of a slog. Grateful for the opportunity to be part of people's lives..dB

From 2020 until now I work in hospitality.

What I mean to say by that is simply this: I walk around and get things done.

I have been in hospitality (catering, banqueting, events; formal and informal) since my early 20-ties. As I am writing I have become the "jack of all trades" and I just walk around until everything is done. When you are one of the workaholics you keep walking until you are exhausted. The burn-out is real.

Because I am burning up I am going to leave hospitality behind. I cannot even eat the food at my place of work any more. I am literally through...

What kind of music teaching? A particular instrument/instruments?

I've known a few terrific music teachers. They don't make much money or get a ton of respect, but they often have a major impact on kids who are open to learning music.

Nothing fancy - Just a high school music teacher. I wouldn't say I was terrific, but I enjoyed teaching higher level music specialist kids, the ones who really wanted to be there.

I think I can relate... spent the better part of 18 years in retail. In the end, it proved to be a trap.

That's one of the perpetual cruxes of teaching. All teachers enjoy teaching those who are motivated and really want to be there. Very few enjoy the drudgery of "just getting through the day" teaching those that are only there because they have to be in school.

Yes a teacher can motivate the class somewhat, but there's so many external factors that are beyond your control and that can make or break your spirit. .

I am now in my mid 60s and have been a software engineer my entire career (44 years). When I began after college in 1979, the term "software engineer" didn't exist and we were called computer programmers. My jobs have been in tech companies ranging from startups (4 which failed) to large multinationals.

I have worked on mainframe operating systems, device drivers, storage and display device firmware, Windows, Mac and mobile applications on a variety of platforms. I am currently at a software startup and I'm pretty sure that I'm the oldest employee in the company. Almost all of my colleagues (including the CEO) are less than half my age and some may be one-third my age.

My job title says I'm a UI/UX designer but I'm pretty much a jack of all trades in digital design, including branding (which I absolutely suck at), web, motion, printing, vector illustrations, and anything that is needed. I'm also somehow a lead designer so I do a bit of negotiating, motivating, and mentoring as well, which is sometimes not as fun as some people make it out to be. To say that trying to lead the team in a fully remote company while suffering from imposter syndrome (because I got promoted way too fast) is a challenge would be an understatement. Anyway, at least the kids like me (I think) and the wage is pretty great (for a Thai) so I'm grateful.

That sounds like a lot of ranting but what makes all this bearable and even enjoyable is the colleagues from all around the world who are easy to work with and are just nice human beings. Some are also into audio and we swap gears often. Sometimes that's all a man needs!

My 'job' is a student (but I'm not working so I'm jobless, in the normal sense). Contrary to what people think I don't make cans for a living. I wish my job could be headphones though. But I know eventually I'll wind up in some academic program or a company that doesn't care about making cans and fade into nothingness.

My wife did residency and then practiced medicine for many years at a community health center.

I’ve thought this before and maybe I asked you about it at some point but I forget - you have amazing English for a native Thai. Did you study in the US or England or something?
