I know a lot of people that buy new vinyl like lana del rey or something and never even listen to it. It's not even some special edition..It's just decoration for them.
The gear in that photo could make a pretty rad little starter setup actually. Nothing wrong with the U-Turn, Q350, or that little Cambridge integrated. But yes, it's going to sound like shit with the speakers 2 feet apart on some rickety table stuffed in an alcove.
looking at differences between styli is giving me a headache.
Microlinear,Shibata, Chabata...
After looking up more I have a new rabbit hole, the challenge of balancing sound with technical aspects like surface area
It's a crapshoot. Quality is all over the place. And then there's the cost/maintenance on a legit system.
I buy albums that matter to me on vinyl for sentiment. My mom has a HUGE vintage collection and I sunk a couple of grand into setting her up decent. She loves it. Pre-C19 I used to bring my records over and we'd showcase different music to each other. Look at the art, read along. Spot a name and discuss trivia.
Also... yeah that setup is not good. None of the parts are too bad but... why are the speakers on the same shitty little table? Why are they right next to each other in that alcove? I'm no stranger to shitty rooms (I'm in one) but that is just bad, man. Surely they could at least be up on stands with a proper rack for the rest. Doesn't have to take up that much space to have em on a good wall, maybe basic treatment.
This pic in dictionary. An agglomeration of newish items thought to be hip, placed in a shrine like setting and pics of which are used to bolster an online ego and is not for listening. oops sorry @robot zombie haha
@bixby I think a lot of people, especially first-timers, genuinely don't know the basics about how to set up a speaker system. I also think a fair chunk of vinyl lovers are not what we would call "audiophiles", it's just a fun way for them to listen and connect to their music. And heck, some of the recent posts in the SBAF 'Pictures of your speaker system' thread make you scratch your head too.
