As with practically everyone else, few months ago found out my A1C is just outside the "normal" range and so pre-diabetic. Cutting down on the beer (maybe 1 or 2 per week), no more Margaritas, and sticking to a single glass of wine, Vodka + plain soda, or Scotch whiskey neat. Today was a Vodka soda day during lunch with the work spouse.

A clarified milk punch: rum, cognac, arrack, black tea, spices, whey. Not something I'd usually order, especially in a novelty glass.

But Mrs Fastfwd wanted to try it, and they only serve it in pairs, so...

Sweet, with a little acid -- like apple juice. Easy to drink.

It was fine, but I won't be reducing black tea and straining curdled milk through cheesecloth to make it myself.

I mentioned this in a profile post, but try Smoked Wagon. They have a few different bottlings; try the regular "cheap" one first

    Four Roses

these are mostly rye-based (on top of the mandatory 50% corn) which is my preference
wheated bourbons in general will be less 'bitey' and might be a better starting point if you're new to drinking straight up
    Maker's Mark
    Buffalo Trace
    etc

Homemade whiskey from a member of my local cigar lounge that I got for $30. 100 proof flavored with cinnamon and vanilla bean. Cinnamon gives it the flavor notes while the vanilla bean gives it the background taste that tone down the harshness of the alcohol.

Had it a few times, it is quite good. You would really like it. I am not trolling this time.

After of course you let me into your bathroom.
