ZMF Classics are bananas. w Lry+ and a Ken Rad, cable and mesh tweaks, early Massive Attack is glorious... It's all there. Mar 22, 2024 at 10:35 PM

A week of office time with a Fulla and DT770s (w Lamb Ori pads). It's a sweet little setup. Not 800Ss w BHA-1 but closer than it should be.

In my audiophile circles dt770 doesn’t seem that popular but with streamers and pros I see a ton of people use them. I wonder if I should revisit them

I agree they have a mixed reputation. I was hesitant, but needed reasonabley priced closed headphones for the office. The M50xs were objectionable, so I thought to try the DT770s. They were a bit rough out of the box, but with some time and lamb Ori pads, they revealed themselves as pretty good - granted I listen at medium to low levels. I am going to try the Custom Cans copper ring and mass loading mod on them, too.

Going to a co-work space this month. Can't use open-backs so I tried the M50x s (nope) and then DT770s. With my old ZMF Lambskins = not bad.

I like my HD-25 but I modified it with 600Ω drivers so it’s essentially a desktop headphone. I need to find some sort of portable amp to go out with it. Or swap back the 70Ω drivers

@Cspirou , I looked that the HD25s as well. The mod sounds interesting. I am surprised at how decent the DT770s are. The ZMF pads make the balance agreeable, though the bass is a bit too intense, I am going to do the @jfunk Custom Cans mod to them and see if that swings things a bit better.

Piety will not power up with Atomic Bob Noise Nuke in the DC chain. The Noise nuke also buzzes with the Piety wall wart. Any idea why?

        DON'T DO THAT!!!!
Noise Nuke is for smps DC output. Piety uses an AC step down transformer, output is AC. You may have blown the electrolytic capacitors in the Noise Nuke(s).

Gah! Copy that. I did NOT understand it was an AC device. Dumb me not reading the labels and assuming that it was DC. This explains the weirdo readings from my meter. These were quick-ish tests. Noise Nukes are functioning (supplying power, at least) with other devices. Thanks everyone. Mystery solved and disaster averted (I think).

Follow up. Is there a meter reading I can make without taking everything apart to determine if I destroyed the capacitors in the Noise Nukes?

@gixxerwimp , ahah. Point taken. Day 2 Piety: it has settled in a bit, smoother and low volume listening has more fullness. It has a really engaging sound that gets me moving around and singing along which I do not often do with headphones.

GR-Research x-overs built/installed in Wharfedales. Speakers disappear, ++separation/clarity, bright. Hearing system limit? Need burn-in?

My impressions of Danny’s xover designs is he does tend a bit toward brighter, although some of that may tame with burn in. Also Wharfedales tend to lean darker on the top end, so you may be hearing a fair difference between the old and the new. A small change in value used in the tweeter circuit could bring the treble back down a bit if you find it stays too bright. Danny can prob advise on that.

Thanks, @rlow . Yes. The original was dark and soft around the edges - dull almost. I had gotten used to it, so it's probably partly this difference I am responding to. I'm going to let them, and my brain, burn in for a while. Just posting to the DIY thread on the build. It's not as simple as I had thought as Danny's xover is about 3X the size of the original. I don't particularly want to pull it all apart again.

A week in. They're not registering as bright any longer. I am now listening to these $150 CAD speakers as "proper speakers". They're not LS3/5s or P3ESRs but they're past the "they are what they are" barrier.

I have them cranked up on Thom York's Modern Boxes stuff and they're solid - detailed, spacious, clean clean, normal sounding for a near-field-mini-monitors-guy. Just listening to the music. I feel the the AB Noise Nuke got me here. Nervosa or fact?

I keep thinking about the Lyr+, though, and am buying up the occasional 6sn7 based on my experience with the Freya a while ago.I'll probably try a Lyr+ in the new year even though the BHA-1/Hilo/HD800S are exhibiting great synergy. I should know better, but I don't.

Bouncing between the 600s w ZMF F-Suede, 650Mkisses w ZMF F-Lamb, and the 800S stock on the BHA-1 full balanced. 600s have the edge on the mid presence, 6XXMkiss have the edge on warm fuzzies and bass (um...what veil...but a bit crowded). While the 800S can be a bit challenging occasionally, they're super effing big and engaging.
