Haven't yet listened to a modded one, but as has been said so many times, it is a charming benchmark.

It's a nice sound sig, not close to perfect but it hits 95% of things for me.

As someone mentioned, it’s just like an old, familiar blanket. It just feels great wrapped around in it.

I have unmodded 650s in my first ever headphone rig, which I almost never used before, but now working from home, I use all the time. Paired with Vali 2, Modi Multibit and Pi2AES.

Not trying to be contrarian, but I find them very unengaging, veiled and muddy. :( Perhaps it’s the amp or DAC, but currently looking for alternatives.

    Suggestions welcomed!

Play something with a decent groove, especially Jazz or Funk and your feet tap. That is it. There are headphones that don't do that and I don't care, off they go. One catch, it needs a bit of power and then you understand. It is similar to the AKGs in that way.

What I particularly like about it, relative to HD600, is that the mid-bass makes orchestral recordings sound more realistic. Caveat: As long as the other gear doesn't make it sound too dark.

I lean towards HD600 because it works to offset the foibles of my other main cans, but the 650 is, as many have noted, a remarkably comfortable listen that you can just get lost in for ages. It works unmodded for basically every genre that doesn't mandate sub-bass excellence!
