Hi-fi isn't cool or rock & roll, far from it. Motörhead sounds just as middy and nasty through your mom's tv. Music is not about the equipment. Being on this forum and posting more gives one very little rock cred.

So let's just stop the pose and be the bunch of hi-fi nerds we really are.

Thin Lizzy! Good grief, that's so long ago that I can almost remember it!

I can almost remember that one too. It was something my mum liked. Something to do with Africa, right?

(Actually, if I was to dig deep, I think I have the LP)

Just because you hate overdriven bass with no bass in it doesn’t mean it sounds bad. Motorhead scales and sounds good on everything. Their studio sound is pretty much what they actually sounded like. Sometimes worse, sometimes better but pretty close. They were beastly musicians. Motorhead just makes you want to f'ing play too. Just because you like gear and have poor taste doesn’t mean everyone else who likes gear has poor taste. Having poor taste is still better than just pretending to have taste which is what Pitchfork and Vice traffic in.

That being said you’re from Finland ! Nuclear Holocausto Vengeance #1 all time Finnish musical artist!

Everything is about trade-offs. Big boxes, small boxes, OB, widebanders, big woofers, small woofers, horns and everything else. Everyone who claims that there is a simple answer that’s miles beyond everything that’s done in acoustics (time aligned, 1st order crossovers...) is either delusional or doing sales.

If anyone wants to see where the least trade-offs are, just look at what the market is doing. Domestic hi-fi market is a bad example, because it’s very aesthetics driven. Both due to WAF and HAF, as both aren’t immune to looks, they just have different impact on both of them. And there are of course more practical realities of available living space. Hence instead I would propose to look at studio gear. Especially the upper echelons.

So, let’s take a few well-known studio monitors - Genelec 1238, Neumann KH420 and ATC SCM150. Clearly the design goal has been sound quality first, certain SPL targets second (>115dB for sure) and then some thought has been given to ease of integration as all three can be used both stand and soffit mounted. Low end extension doesn’t cover the lowest octave and subwoofers are recommended for true sub-bass playback with all three.

Enclosure and woofer driver size suggests that high VAS/low MMS PA type woofers have been used and augmented with ports. The KH420 is a standout here as it’s the smallest with also a 10” woofer, yet gets comparable low-end extension as the rest two. There’s a good chance that Neumann pays for this with less maximum SPL down low. All three manufacturers acknowledge that a 3-way design is preferable and use 1” dome tweeters, instead of compression drivers. Woofers also are limited to frequencies no higher than 570Hz for the 10” Neumann, 380Hz for ATC and 420Hz for Genny, both using 15” woofers. Genny and Neumann use LR24 crossovers, don’t know about ATC, but there’s a good chance they’re doing the same. Mids are relegated to a 3” dome both in ATC and Neumann camp, whilst Genelec makes do with a custom 5” cone mid. Historically both Neumann and Genelec have used the venerable ATC dome mid, yet later have gone with their own designs, most likely to save money and manage dependencies.

It does seem like studio far fields steer clear of wideband speakers, open baffle designs and panel speakers. This make me think that these people don’t want to pay for the lunch these designs offer.

I am known to bash exotic technologies, so this post won’t be any different. Here are anechoic measurements of Voxativ PI and Neumann KH420 loudspeakers as two polar opposits.

I frankly don’t see the lunch Voxativ is selling for more than 2x the cost of Neumans.

What's funny is that I actually had Motorhead playing on the big JBLs before they were even mentioned here.

I'm with Psalm here. As I am sure Mr. Abe, the proud owner of the Kendrick JBL 4355 in the video, would be too. Motorhead deserves such big speakers. Actually fricking Jewel or other girl-with-wimpy-voice-with-acoustic-guitar does too.

I now post this for all of you to ponder. I laff at one of them. Used and in good condition, one costs x4-5 times more than the other.

LOL, I think it's more like the Voxactiv Pi are simply unacceptable as a studio monitor. The FR is too irregular and the extension is lacking. Don't need measurements for this.

The Voxactiv is impressive that it can reach that high, although it beams like a mofo.

Small speakers that can't get loud ruin everything and make you wish you were in a car or had a pa system or something

I've been going back through their catalog and Motorhead were pretty much excellent at everything: heavy metal, thrash bangers, honky tonk blues, prog rock, acid rock, party anthems, rock covers, folk, country, etc. They get a lot worse after Philthy Animal Taylor left but they could pretty much play anything even if what they mostly did really wasn't rock n roll as imagined by anyone but them and people who wanted to be them

This popped into my head the other day:

Don't forget about the (not insignificant) incentive of mix translatability.

This thread reminds me of my conversations with my Metal head friends. Time for some Dick Dale...

P.S. He used to blow up amps and speakers because his music had to sound powerful. We owe much to his madness.

Admittedly, a therapy with Psalm would be pretty cost effective. "My dad was mean to me, wahahahahaha", "Suck it up. Hey let's listen to manowar, this is the perfect thing for you"

You’ll know if you’re making too much noise if Psalm’s mom stomps loudly on the floor above you.

Otherwise, go crazy and make sure to avoid hitting the lamp with your hair while you synchro air-guitar.
