I have a few pieces of gear, I like almost all of them and find that I am enthralled with whatever I am using and think, "OH YA, this is the one!"

I think inherently we know what we like because it’s what is hooked up and used. Other stuff in a closet may sound good but if we cared about it it wouldn’t be in the closet. Time for me to sell some gear too.

Classical buffs tend toward extremes regarding audio equipment: either they have very extensive systems or they are unconcerned with reproduction quality. The reason, in both cases, is that they’re accustomed to live performance. I’ve purposely charted a middle course—for the same reason.

@Claritas - I've noticed that a lot of serious music reviewers have a garbage audio setup. Robert Chirstgau basically listened to everything through cheap computer speakers. I'm sure he goes to tons of live shows too though

@AlPastor solution for relative levels - or if you want to know the absolute levels, use VSLM and a calibration file to calibrate your mic first, then record each channel individually: https://muehleisen.github.io/VSLM/ . Will PM you re. the file.

You can use any mic to check for channel balance IME, just so long as methodology is consistent. I used a supercardioud handheld dynamic mic (sE V7) to check channel balance on my HD600s once, though that was bypassing the pads.

Don't bother with mics unless you suspect it's the headphones themselves. Get a cheap multimeter, set it to Vac, use REW to play a stereo test tone at some reasonable frequency (440Hz is a good bet), measure across each headphone end on a dual 3.5mm cable.

If I need to travel with something fragile - what Vansen said - get something like a pelican hard case. 2 smalls > 1 large if possible due to how I've seen the large ones get handled. Everything else just goes in a Samsonite or similar-ish soft luggage. Replace as needed.

@penguins I hear you, especially at today's prices. My Samsonite from almost 20 years ago was got at a Nordstrom Rack for maybe $100. But from online reviews, it seems across the board bags have gotten worse. I don't want to buy new bags every couple trips, so am weighing the likelihood that a better brand might survive longer.

It's really a personal preference imo. I have a Muji softcase and a Rimowa aluminium hardcase and like them both. I'm a big fan of the Muji by the way, if you want a cheap option.

Excel or one note is fine for simple inventory, but trying to see if accessories can be cross-used so I don't over clutter.

The extra backward thing I do for halfway decent playlists on Roon is I export them from Spotify through soundiz into Tidal and they just appear. Much better playlists elsewhere that I like to import.

I have no data, but my strong impression, in both personal and work situations, is that it when they are turned off and turned back on again that the faults happen. Or, at least, terminally happen.

I'm also running WD Red drives in a Synology NAS. My IT consultant friend recommended them and I purchased 4 (3 active, one on the shelf if a drive fails).

I’m using Qobuz, which has an even smaller catalog, but usability with Roon or at least HQPlayer without having to jump through hoops is more important to me than that. Otherwise, I would have switched to Apple Music a while ago already, but their system being so closed is a deal breaker.

With Harman at their back, I’m hoping that Roon might be able to strike a deal with Apple and/or Spotify. Still not very probable, but there’s hope, at least.

So far so good with Tidal.

It's only a problem when you start to spend more on tools than on audio. The easy solution then is to buy more audio...

@crenca - graphite is used all the time as a lubricant especially for things that you want to keep dry. It’s great for deadbolts that get stuck sometimes. I have doubts that it can prevent oxidation but if that’s one of it’s uses than I’ll have to read up on it

It might be another substance. I have some at home and intended to get the brand name when I got home but of course I forgot :). Hopefully I will remember tonight…

I know some guys who put their more delicate tools and equipment into pelican-type toolboxes with big fat desiccant packs to keep them dry.
