It's probably a healthy move for those that want to. And I wish them al the best. But I can't help feeling a bit sad about losing so many good people from this community. <3
This shit's just too expensive man. I remember the TOTL headphones being $1500 when I jumped in. Now they're $6K. I remember being kinda grossed out with myself when I bought my Focal Clears and GSX Mini. There are days when I want to just downgrade to a decent USB dongle that can drive the Clears well enough. I've almost sold all my stuff on a number of occasions but I keep getting sucked back in.
For me, I don't regret getting into audio, but like @TheIceman93, sometimes I look at my stuff and wonder why I have so much gear and contemplate downsizing. Then I listen and am sucked in again.
I've taken hiatuses, because frankly there are other things in life that people should be interested in, but I check back in to learn about new things and thoughts. I think what's good about here is that most of the time the pyrates try to keep things real.
Wonder if people need a break or if like a lot of other hobbies I see, more people are starting to need (more) money.
I personally have an end game / finish line in mind / sight where afterwards I just replace things as they wear out, break, or become obsolete / unrepairable. More than half way there.
I can see how someone could lose their mind with this or anything else in life if they don't know where their own lines are first.
I could always push the finish line further, but the cost+time:additional enjoyment ratio isn't worth it for me beyond the line right now. I'm content with a merely "great" system. Don't need a *WOW WTF WAS THAT* level of system to be happy.
I’m far from being out of the hobby, but I’m definitely steering for the exits of the gear-go-round. Still like hearing new things, but not much lust for collecting said new things.
@rhythmdevils Because pursuing "merely great" is enough time / money / effort already lol. Unless I suddenly had 9 figures - then someone would build + setup "WOW WTF" levels of sound for me.
But I've heard that level of system 1x, MAYBE 2x in my life... the 1x was almost 7 figures and even if I had the said 9 figures, I would still be hesitant to fall down that rabbit hole.
At the end of the day it's fun trying new things out (comfort is terrible for me but the YH-100 is a very distinct presentation from what I'm used to), but yeah the goal's just to enjoy listening to music.
I can understand wanting a flavour can on top of a "reference", but dedicated headphones per genre is pushing it a bit lmao. That's to say nothing of DACs and amps...
Nothing good is being produced. Whats the point of having all the hardware, when all you get is Taylor swift? Movie industry is suffering too, with lack of inspiration and original ip. Same with gaming. Then people begin to wonder, do I just keep upgrading while listening to the same stuff over and over again?
I think it's sad too. You can get good sound cheap if you're not prone top "chasing the dragon", we all have to find our equilibrium. Still, we all have to find our own path as well.
I go back and forth, I'm firmly entrenched in what most here would consider mid fi. I think it all punches well above it's asking price though, to my taste anyway. Spring time into summer I almost never listen to headphones unless it's really late and I've had a couple drinks. Also speakers! and everything that's "better" than what I have is out of reach and overpriced anyway. IMO of course.
@HotRatSalad who cares about whether gear is low-, mid-, or hifi if you are able to enjoy the music, who is better off the guy who enjoys the music he listens to or the guy who is on the eternal improvement trip and is never satisfied with what he is listening to?
@mitochondrium 100 % today I plugged my JAR650 into my measly jot 2 and BF2 with a cheap gran via cable and I want nothing ! Well except for maybe a pair of clears lol
Nothing good comes of it. It's all hedonic treadmill and paradox of choice. The pursuit is corrupting from the start. The only way to win is never play.
