If one did not spring for the module you could then run an Eitr to Modi Multibit or a gen 5 Bifrost Multibit and get the new amp and gen 5 USB right?

Would there be any advantage to having the built in MB dac beyond the convenience of having a one box solution?

    From Schiit Happened:

"One of the goals for Lyr 3 was to have it, ah, be a lot less like a barbecue than Lyr 2. Lyr 2 draws 38W from the AC socket, all the time, every time. That’s 38 watts it has to dissipate through the chassis. That’s a hot chassis. In contrast, Jotunheim pulls 16 watts, all the time. That’s a whole lot less. Lyr 3 does 25W. Not as good as Jotunheim, but a hell of a lot better than Lyr 2."

The Modi 2 and Modi MB are not Gen 5.

Modi MB is same price as the MB Module.

    • Added convenience of being all in one solution.
    • Loss of being able to use things like Etir with no S/PDIF input.

    There is no free lunch.

Thing is, can you leave the DAC module on while the amp is off? Cause if not, it kinda lowers the value of the Multibit option.
(Aside from the convenience of an all-in-one solution)

Thanks for the link. In this case Lyr 3 as all-in-one unit is a tube Jotunheim with Multibit module for $699 (tube amp with built in Multibit module).

It’s kind of makes sense in schiit’s Line up, but I doubt it will perform better than Eitr/Modi Multibit/Vali 2 (and this starch is still cheaper)

Lyr 3 as a separate tube amp might be a whole other story though...

Well I have a decision to make then....just get an Eitr or continue my quest for a nicely priced used gen 5 Bifrost Multibit and sell me Modi Multibit.

I'm not sure he said the multibit card was unbalanced. Can you point me to where that was stated?

    Thanks.

There's a lot more to it than that. Enough that I think your statement is inaccurate. Go have a read.

    Can we call it Jimby?
    (Jot plus MB DAC module)

Also can anyone confirm if it's balanced yet?
Lol @Elnrik beat me to it

Edit: Joti also apparently has a unique topology so someone who knows more might tell us whether the balanced DAC even matters... anyway, slightly offtopic as this thread is about the new Lyr 3 (looks awesome)

I'm pretty sure the multibit card is balanced, but the Lyr 3 is SE and uses the card in a SE mode. Put into the Jotunheim, it should provide fully balanced magics to the amp.

(Calling Jason to confirm please. I checked your site, and it didn't specifically say on the MB card page)

Here's a dumb question...maybe I'm looking too far into this...

If you have to leave the MB dacs on all the time for them to sound the best then...why would you get the MB module on an amplifier that can't be left on all the time without killing the tubes?

Glad this is finally released. I heard this last year at the Pasadena meet along with the multibit card. It sounded nice but I didn't spend enough time with it to comment thoroughly because of all the other toys there.

From the description it seems like a maxxed out Vali 2, as Jason sort of mentioned two years ago

I wonder if any SBAF staff had their embargo lifted and can now wax poetic about the Lyr 3? @purr1n ?

I assume it will still need some initial burn-in, but not sure if warm up will really be an issue with 25 watts running in the chassis.

For me that isn't an issue. I leave the PC on at all times so i can remote into it. So even when i turn the amp on/off, the DAC has power.

Forget the "coherence" stuff. It's the constant tranconductance output stage that's the really winner. If Schiit ever gets this into power amps, game over for most - except for those with deep pockets, or have the patience to restore legendary vintage power amps like the M-22.

Yes, this is the amp that appeared here and there at the private meets. This is the one I've been telling people to wait for. Roll one 6SN7 - a great sounding tube - makes 6922s sound wimpy. The Lyr 3 worked great for modded HD800s, HD650s, LCD2C. For HE-6, the better way to go is still Saga / Vidar. Does it crush the great amps? No. But it's definitely the best Schiit amp has ever made.

Ah, so it's USB-powered? Fair enough. Had to ask and see, as I wasn't sure what was going on with that, haha.

Might use an external hub for a bit of power isolation, which would do the same regardless of if the PC is on or not.

I'm just curious how the coherence topology sounds, especially with planars.

    This is some good Schiit!

Will be very eager to hear when folks are able to A/B Jot vs. Lyr3 with fairly common benchmark (on SBAF anyways) HD650.

Being able to stuff a MB in either of these chassis is f'ing awesome.
