I remain an unapologetic Modius E fanboy. Have one sitting under ZDT Jr that's just lovely as a bedside rig.

@HotRatSalad I only buy Sennheiser pads, but yea the new ones are pretty bad. I've got a lot of old Sennheiser pads to compare to.

Interested in more impressions of the modius E here. I was eyeing it for a very similar chain.

@FlySweep It's not bad. I can't fault it really. Doesn't have the holographics of an R2R DAC. It doesn't have whatever is going on in Bifrost 2's treble that bugs me. It requires zero warm up time. I think it needs a good source, It's got Unison but USB isn't as good as the higher end Schiit DACs. Any specific questions?

I too prefer the SS Piety over the SW51+, but for JAR800s, they need dat bass.

Easiest way is to take medium to light hold tape, painters tape or luthiers tape works, I usually use luthiers tape, and very lightly touch the driver with the sticky side until it gently comes out back to shape.

Important not to get too much on the driver so you don't stress the voice coil. This happens with our TPE driver in aeolus/atticus a lot when tube amp arching happens. Make sure to use non-marring tape like luthiers or blue painters tape etc. Or light masking tape at worst.

I was on a personal loaner tour for a Hyland headphone. For my week turn I planned to write a post for each comparison to each headphone in my collection starting with cheapest to most expensive. I started with Porta Pro... The fact that this approx $400 Hyland didnt totally decimate Koss offended the loaner and he asked me to stop reviewing and to forward to next person immediately.

He said he was going to pay forward shipping because I didnt get my full loaner turn. I had already finished writing my next comparison to my next cheapest headphone (4XX) so posted it and shipped out at my expense. It was a personal loaner and the guy was a fan of this small company, so I felt bad that I didnt like his Hyland so paid for shipping myself. The Hyland also didnt decimate 4XX... :(

I feel you - thinking of all the hours I spent adjusting positioning of my Magnepans 1mm at a time only to sell them a few weeks after locking them in. The path of least nervosa is the path most enjoyed

And now my HD800 and HD650 sound like unclear over dampened garbage.There is really something about driving a low Z headphone from a low Z source. And bonus if the headphone has minimal dampening and no to very small pads.

Maybe you just got the synergy part down for the Koss headphones.

That Koss KSC75 is better than most people think. Get a K500/K501 with a good amplifier and you know the difference AKG madness makes. When you are broke, Koss saves your wallet.

On the other hand, if I were to introduce counterpoint, then yes, there is very smeary and homogenous sounding gear that can blur voice leading by ruining transient attacks. There are a ton of much more expensive headphones than the KSC75 that are far more guilty of that though :)

The original PX100 was nice. The mark 2 was also nice. The sweet spot was the PX200 II, basically a baby HD25. Thing was, the KSC75 and PortaPro combined were cheaper than a PX200 II. Koss offered more value for money...

@Deep Funk My friend uses the PX100 a lot and I suggested he try the Porta Pro, which he thought sounded like a tin can in comparrison. Which I always thought was strange because I've never heard a tin-like sound out of a Porta Pro, always found it very smooth. How about you?

Both warmish with kind of booming bass. Not bad for portable use to be honest. The difference must be the drivers and how they render the frequencies. The PX100 and PX100 II were at one point difficult to find at retailers (I do not know why) so yeah PortaPro.

I get too much bass boost/bloom with Clear/Stellia on high Z. Would expect similar with Elex due to similar impedance curve.

Don't hear any difference in HF timbre.

With Elex, I prefer high Z, less dry.

Seems like a preference thing! I find Elex too try on low Z, agree. I think Clear and Stellia have a bit more bass than Elex, so that makes sense to me!

@YMO I can definately see this, I think for my taste I like a bit more bass and a bit of a rolled off top.

Both are great combos. I use Jot 2 instead of Asgard 3; it’s a little more aggressive which I think works well with the Aeolus

@jnak00 I have a Jot 2 and agree it's a good pairing with the Aeolus. Agree with the more aggressive nature, it wakes up the Aeolus. My favorite pairing there is Jot 2 balanced in balanced out and on high gain with STOCK universe leather pads. I prefer suede pads so I bounce to the Asgard 3 for that combo or do Jot 2 with 1/4" out on high gain.
