my point is that there has always been a bell curve if you will of perf vs surface level visual quality, and comparing a game that is very much so far to the right to ones in the bottom third and saying there's a large scale trend is bogus imo. no one is out there saying ER is a technical masterpiece, it isn't. and by the same token, there are current games that are just as performant as BFV.

I do however think games generally launch in worse shape than they should now, I rarely play them right at launch, preferring for bugs to get worked out for the first month or two.

Look....I liked the Euforia back in the day enough to buy one, but I wouldn't pay $3500 for it. It would have to improve significantly in so many ways, including but not exclusive to PRaT, resolve, and stage. And even then, as an OTL it remains a specialist product. Too bad the ZDS isn't made anymore.

CP2077 and Elden Ring have no right to run this bad on my 1080ti while Battlefield V look miles better than ER and almost as good as CD2077 while rocking a +60fps. Those the most popular examples and there are plenty more others.
The optimization gap between consoles and PC is getting bigger every generation and it's sickening.

would it make sense to just get something good now and then in 2-3 years upgrade for the next 5+ years? Prices now are insane, and perhaps the competition brings a unification of architecture/standards/whatever? you never know with the way things are going what the future holds..

Fixed platforms always get juiced harder as time goes on. Variable open ones won't by nature.

If you're looking for longevity check out the UE5 tech demos to gauge next-gen game requirements. Reqs are set to sky rocket, and CPU will be the bottleneck for even 60 FPS. A 4080 may struggle to get a steady 4k60 in a 1st wave game that runs 1440p@30 on PS5/XSX, and will decrease in 2nd, 3rd, wave etc.

Looks like they launch middle of next month. If you are close to a Microcenter, could camp out for one, play the lottery of trying to buy it online before it sells out, or trying around Thursdays in the morning for restocks on AMD's site directly. Previously AMD cards held lower demand than Nvidia cards so my local MC would usually have stock on them even last year

AMD cards at launch in 2020 was kinda pathetic as even my MC, biggest one in the country, for around 200-300 people that showed up, they had like 10-15 each of the 6800XT/6900XT so hopefully AMD actually has more stuff available and it isn't just the pricier AIBs

1080p content will, all other things being equal, look better on a 1080p display than a 4k one. What collusion mentioned would be called integer scaling and almost no software does it, they will nearly all use bilinear or some sort of spline filtering to get to 4k

The screen door effect may still be noticeable on a laptop but honestly, at least IME, it's something you can learn to live with. 1080p displays are often higher refresh rate for equivalent price and that matters more to me, and you'll not be needing as powerful hardware to make the most of it. 4K is better-suited to larger (32in and above) desktop monitors.

@Cspirou You don't have to use a GPU for HQPlayer, but there's the option of offloading some of the CPU load of upsampling to the GPU, as long as you have an NVidia GPU. For PCM it's really not necessary -- a Raspberry Pi can handle PCM upsampling these days -- but depending on how high you're upsampling and what filter you're using, DSD can be a workout for even a high-end gaming PC.
