      MoFi confirmed they cut from 4x DSD transfers and have been since at least 2008.

        @MellowVelo The vinyl and SACDs are definitely mastered separately, and by different people as well. They both start with the same 4x DSD source.

        I have to say, other than a few marquee jazz titles, the MoFi re-issue program, which heavily favors Boomer rock, isn't totally my bag. But I nearly picked up their Mingus, Ah, Um one-step back when. Probably wouldn't now.

        Whatever the actual mastering chain, I’ve enjoyed a lot of MoFi titles over the years. I just hope that, moving forward, they strive for clarity in their marketing. Miles Showell at Abbey Road got a lot of shit for using a digital step. At least he was honest.

        I have no problems with vinyl that uses a digital step, it's been happening since the late 70s. What I do mind is a company leading consumers to think their product is AAA when it isn't. It's not proven that's happening with MoFi yet, but if it is that's a big blow to their credibility.

        I’ve always said I don’t really care about vinyl cause like 99% of what I listen to is recorded/mixed/mastered digitally. If at any point it hits digital before it’s pressed, just give me _that_ version

        I guess to expand on my thought, if it was ever digital, I don’t see any reason to use a complicated mechanical system to attempt to recreate whatever dac was used to make the pressing, lemme use my own dac in the first place

        In general, I've noticed a lot of more modern remasters are well done. More instrument space, more 3D, peaks tamed, etc. It's like the recording engineers actually learned how to do it properly.

        Vinyl requires more care because there are physical limits to how far the sound can be compressed. I do think the vinyl resurgence has led to more care in mastering though.

        Ah, I did not realize you were talking about a vinyl release. I was thinking the opposite: Better DAC's in cell phones, combined with streaming services that can output in hi-res, expose poor mastering and compressed/bad recordings to the masses. Queen's old CD's and their 40th anniversary editions are like night and day.

        @Cspirou I will always have special memories of the Cash cover of Hurt. I was in film school and on a shoot the day it was released and we all took a break to watch the video of it together and were just blown away by how good it was. I was one of the few NIN fans there, although I think everyone knew NIN did the original. It was kind of surreal and amazing to share it with so many people at once.

        Super! I was listening to Aoxa Moxoa;

        Mention of the Europe *triple* album always causes me acute guilt. Back in the day, TVs were big enough to put stuff on. And they were hot. And you can guess what I did with my housemate's copy of that album. It was way beyond my means to even compensate him at the time.
